Altria Buys UST Tobacc - Becomes even larger Tobacco Juggernaut

In hopes to continue their dominance in the tobacco market, but also seeing that their cigarette business will not last forever, Altria purchased US Tobacco. UST's flagship brands, Skoal and Copenhagen, dominate the smokeless market, making Altria a major player.

With increasing smokefree laws in this country, it looks like tobacco companies are looking to diversify the products they offer in order to increase profits. They look to position smokeless tobacco as a "safer" alternative, and also a smokefree workplace option.
