SNUS - What is that?

Posted July 21, 2008 in Talk | 180 views | 1 comment

As more and more states and cities in the U.S. go smoke-free more and more people are giving-up cigarettes - and this has the industry scrambling. They’re looking for new customers, or trying to find a way to transition those who quit smoking into a new product. Here enters SNUS.

SNUS is a smokeless tobacco product, similar to chew or snuff. The big difference is that SNUS comes in little packets (think teabags). The tobacco industry is pushing snus packets as a more socially acceptable option, because you don’t have to continually spit a wad of slime out. They are also marketing it as a way to get your nicotine fix when you can’t have a cigarette – like on an airplane. Great, just what airplanes need, more people with disgusting habits.

The thing that is the most alarming is who is behind this new wave of tobacco products. The two most popular brands in the U.S., Marlboro and Camel, are now producing their own versions of SNUS. This is an attempt to go after new consumers who smoke, but would never consider using a smokeless product. Camel is especially trying to tackle the urban market – a demographic of people who traditionally shies away from the smokeless variety. Smokeless tobacco is mostly consumed in rural areas.

Camel is attacking the Twin Cities with vigor. We are one of the few cities in the U.S. in which Camel decided to test market their version of SNUS. They have even gone so far to give away free SNUS packets when you buy a pack of Camels.
