Check out this amazing youth-led effort in Massachusetts!
If you've been following the Catalyst blog today, you'll notice some connections. We have been reading up on the Youth Food Movement (a network of yout activists across the US supporting local food and sustainable agriculture), and Terra Madre (a global network focusing on these important food issues too).
Well, Project Sprout leaders are members of the Youth Food Network, and Sam Levin, a Project Sprout founder, was a keynote speaker at the Terra Madre global conference last year.
So, what did Sam and his friends do? Sam, Sarah Steadman, and Natalie Akers developed an organic, student-run garden on the grounds of their high school, Monument High in Great Barrington, MA. Project Sprout supplies the school’s cafeteria with fresh fruits and vegetables, helps feed the hungry in the community and serves as a living laboratory for students of the Monument school system.
Sounds and looks pretty amazing! You can read all about it on the Slow Food USA blog.
And, look what else we found in the news TODAY! Project Sprout was just honored by the state of Massachusetts for their fabulous work.
More exciting news from the article: "this year, the
school is adding a 22-tree apple orchard and 150 raspberry plants.
It's also started a composting project and there are plans to build a
new shed over the next few weeks. The ultimate goal is to serve all the fruits and vegetables of the students' labor in their school cafeterias."
